What you mustn’t lose

In case of fire

There is one thing to hang onto

It is not humour — always the first to fall.

Not courage, nor curiosity.

-

When the going gets tough,

There is just one thing to hang onto

Not dope or wine or a prescription panacea.

Not Faith. Faith?

-

In the sludge of the gutter

There is one thing to hang onto

Not the smile whose secret alchemy irradiates you with endorphins

Not the music that makes you cry

-

At the hour of the wolf

There is one thing to hang onto

Not dog, lover, child, confidante

Expecting better than best

Not warm pink memories of love, triumph, success, peace, communication

Not the tender dreams that fight through the tarmac of doubt and ridicule

Not the innocent heart that holds steadfast beneath the cynical carapace

-

Shipwrecked, alone, afraid

There is one thing to hang onto…….

Now, where did I put my glasses?

What was I saying?
